Shredded Memory Foam Pillows: The Complete Guide

Oct 22, 2026

The short answer: a shredded memory foam pillow is filled with small pieces of memory foam instead of one solid block. The pieces move independently, so the pillow molds to your head, lets more air through than solid foam, and (if it has a zippered liner) lets you add or remove fill to set the height. The trade-offs: it needs regular fluffing, it can shift overnight, and the foam itself usually shouldn't be washed. It suits side, back and combination sleepers best, especially anyone unsure what height they need.

This guide covers how shredded memory foam works, how it compares with solid memory foam, the real pros and cons, what to look for when you buy one, and how to set it up, adjust it and keep it in shape. We make shredded memory foam pillows, so this is the guide we wish every buyer read first.

What is a shredded memory foam pillow?

Memory foam is a polyurethane foam that softens under body heat and pressure, then slowly returns to its shape. It has an unusual origin. NASA traces it to the late 1960s, when a NASA Ames Research Center project to design safer seating for airline passengers worked with Charles Yost of Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation. The team called the material "temper foam." It went on to be commercialized as memory foam.

A shredded memory foam pillow takes that foam and cuts it into small pieces, which sit loosely inside a fabric liner. The fill is often blended with something else, usually polyester fiber or latex, to change the feel. In our Bamboo Curve, for example, the fill is 75% CertiPUR-US® certified memory foam and 25% polyester fiber.

Most shredded pillows have a zipper on the inner liner, which is what makes them adjustable: open it, take fill out to make the pillow lower and softer, or put fill in to make it taller and firmer. Our guide to adjustable pillows covers that in detail.

Solid memory foam is one molded block. Shredded memory foam is loose pieces in a zippered liner, so you can add or remove fill to change the height.

How shredded memory foam works

  • The pieces move independently. Push into the pillow and the pieces shift around your head rather than the whole pillow pressing back as one block. That is why it feels moldable rather than springy.
  • There is air between the pieces. A solid block has nowhere for air to go. Loose pieces leave gaps, which is why shredded foam generally sleeps cooler than solid memory foam.
  • The amount of fill sets both height and firmness. On a shredded pillow the two move together: more fill makes it taller and firmer, less makes it lower and softer.
  • The fill settles. Over a night, and over months, the pieces pack down and drift. Fluffing redistributes them, and adding fill tops the height back up.

Shredded vs solid memory foam

These comparisons come from Sleep Foundation's memory foam pillow guide, plus what we have seen with our own pillows.

Solid (one-piece) memory foam Shredded memory foam
Feel Firm, even, slow to respond Moldable; can be set soft or firm
Height Fixed (some have removable inserts) Adjustable if it has a zippered liner
Holding its shape Holds its shape without fluffing Needs regular fluffing; can shift overnight
Temperature Tends to hold more heat Air moves between the pieces, so it is generally more temperature-neutral
Weight Heavy; many memory foam pillows weigh 5 pounds or more Lighter than solid foam of the same size
Washing Spot-clean only Depends on the brand: some are machine washable, many (including ours) are cover-only
Price Average Often slightly more
How it wears out Develops permanent dents Goes lumpy or flat, but can be fluffed and topped up

The pros of shredded memory foam pillows

  • You set the height. This is the big one. Pillow height depends on your sleep position, shoulder width and mattress, and a 2021 review of pillow-height research found no firm conclusions about one optimal height. An adjustable fill lets you find yours.
  • It molds to you. You can push the fill where you want it: higher under your neck, lower under your head, or bunched toward your shoulder.
  • More airflow than solid foam. The gaps between pieces let heat and moisture move, so it usually feels less warm than a solid block.
  • It can be refreshed instead of replaced. When the fill settles, you can add more. When the cover wears, many brands sell replacements.
  • It generally holds up better than loose fiber. Polyester fiberfill tends to flatten and clump with use and has the shortest lifespan of the common fills. A well-filled shredded foam pillow keeps its height through the night.

The cons, and how to deal with them

  • It needs fluffing. The fill shifts and packs down. Fluffing daily and tumbling it in the dryer on low every couple of weeks keeps it even.
  • It can go flat in the middle overnight. The fill pushes out to the sides under your head. The usual fix is simply to add a little more fill, which leaves less room for it to move.
  • New foam smell. Memory foam releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when it is first unpacked. Sleep Foundation describes these as considered harmless, though the smell can bother sensitive people. Airing the inner liner out for about 48 hours usually clears it, and CertiPUR-US® certified foam is tested for low VOC emissions.
  • The foam usually can't be washed. Wet foam soaks up water and is hard to dry. Most shredded pillows are cleaned by washing the cover and freshening the foam. See how to wash a shredded memory foam pillow.
  • It is heavier than fiber pillows, and it arrives very full, so it can feel too firm until you take some fill out.

Who shredded memory foam pillows suit

Sleeper How well it suits How to set it
Side sleepers Very well Keep most of the fill in for a high loft
Back sleepers Very well Remove a little fill for a medium height
Combination sleepers Very well Set it for the position you spend the most time in
Stomach sleepers Can work Remove a lot of fill for a low, soft pillow
People who want a very soft, sink-in feel Less well Down or down alternative may suit you better

What to look for when you buy one

Shredded memory foam pillows vary a lot. These are the things that separate a good one from a disappointing one:

  1. A zippered inner liner, separate from the outer cover. Two layers mean you can wash the cover without the foam spilling out, and adjust the fill without fighting the cover. A single-layer pillow is harder to live with.
  2. CertiPUR-US® certified foam. The CertiPUR-US program certifies foam that is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and phthalates regulated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, with low VOC emissions (less than 0.5 parts per million).
  3. A disclosed fill blend. Look for a stated ratio of foam to fiber or latex. More foam generally means more support; more fiber, a softer feel.
  4. Extra fill included. Pillows arrive filled, but having a spare bag means you can go taller, or top it up later, without buying anything.
  5. A removable, machine-washable cover. Check the cover's care label as well as the pillow's.
  6. The right shape and size. Standard, queen and king lengths, plus curved designs for side sleepers. Our guide to curved, contour and cervical pillows explains the shapes.
  7. A trial period and warranty. It can take a week or more to dial in the right height, so a trial matters more with adjustable pillows than most.

A note on "bamboo pillows": many shredded memory foam pillows are sold as bamboo pillows. In most of them, including ours, the bamboo is in the cover fabric (bamboo rayon), not the fill. The fill is still shredded memory foam.

How to set up a new shredded memory foam pillow

These steps are from the card that comes with every Sidney Sleep pillow:

  1. Unroll it and let it expand. This can take up to 24 hours.
  2. Wash the outer cover while you wait.
  3. Air out the inner liner for 48 hours or until the new-product smell is gone, in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight and wet areas.
  4. Tumble it in the dryer on low for about 20 to 30 minutes to fluff it and spread the foam evenly.
  5. Put the cover back on and try it out, then adjust the fill as below.

How to adjust it

Most shredded pillows arrive generously filled, so most people adjust by taking fill out. Change it one handful at a time and give each change a night:

  • Side sleepers usually keep most of the fill.
  • Back sleepers usually remove a little.
  • Stomach sleepers usually remove a lot.
  • On a soft mattress, you sink in further, so you may need less fill. On a firm mattress, you may need more.

Keep the fill you take out in a bag so you can add it back later.

How to care for it

  • Fluff it daily when you make your bed. Here is how to fluff a pillow properly.
  • Every couple of weeks, tumble it in the dryer on low for about 30 minutes to redistribute the foam.
  • No dryer? Empty the fill into a clean box or large bucket, separate it by hand and refill. Don't wet the foam.
  • Wash the cover, not the foam, following the care label.
  • Top it up with fresh fill when it starts to feel lower than it used to.

How long does a shredded memory foam pillow last?

The main pillow guides put shredded memory foam at about 2 to 3 years, and longer if you top up the fill as it settles. Because the parts are separate, you can often replace just the fill or the cover rather than the whole pillow. See how often to replace a pillow for the tests that tell you when it is really worn out.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Too firm or too tall when new It arrives fully filled Remove fill a handful at a time
Flat in the middle by morning Fill pushes out to the sides under your head Add a little fill; fluff it daily
Lumpy Fill has packed together Tumble on low for 30 minutes, or empty it and separate the pieces by hand
New smell VOCs from fresh foam Air out the liner for about 48 hours; tumble on low
Feels lower than it used to Fill has settled over time Top it up with fresh fill
Musty smell Moisture trapped in the foam Dry it thoroughly; replace the fill if the smell stays

FAQ

Is shredded memory foam better than solid memory foam?
It depends on what you want. Shredded foam is adjustable, moldable and generally cooler. Solid foam gives even, firm support with no fluffing, but at one fixed height.

Are shredded memory foam pillows good for side sleepers?
Yes, they are one of the better options, because side sleepers need a lot of height and the exact amount varies from person to person. A shredded pillow lets you set it.

Do shredded memory foam pillows go flat?
The fill settles and shifts, especially under your head overnight. Daily fluffing, a low dryer cycle every couple of weeks and an occasional top-up of fill keep it at height.

Can you wash a shredded memory foam pillow?
Some brands say their pillows can be machine washed; most say to wash the cover only. Check your label. For ours, wash the cover and freshen the foam without water.

Do shredded memory foam pillows sleep hot?
They generally sleep cooler than solid memory foam, because air moves between the pieces. They can still feel warmer than very open fills such as buckwheat.

Why does my new shredded memory foam pillow smell?
Fresh foam releases VOCs when it is first unpacked. Air out the inner liner for about 48 hours and tumble it on low. The smell fades.

How much fill should I take out?
Start with none. Sleep on it for a night, then remove one handful at a time until your head sits level in your usual position.

Are bamboo pillows made of bamboo?
Usually only the cover. Most "bamboo pillows" are shredded memory foam inside a bamboo rayon cover.
